X, a young man, cannot leave his apartment. In the grip of his dreariness, he lives solely by the repetition of gestures. When he spots a young woman in the street, his daily life changes. As his food reserves run low, he creates an imaginary world.
Director's Statement
Why does X not leave his apartment anymore?
Without any financial problems or handicap which could explain the situation of the young man, his sedentary lifestyle is due to the established comfort in our society: Technologies which have made our life more pleasant restrain human relations.
Moreover, anonymity has become a norm in big cities. Often, we do not even know our neighbour and would never dare to knock on his or her door unless there is a real problem. In fact, we are very close to each other, but we do not get in touch. Instead of approaching people, we are sceptical towards the confrontation with a person we do not know.
As a consequence, those who do not manage to integrate themselves or to push themselves forward either in daily life or in the virtual world are more and more dropped out from society.
“80 m²” treats the life of a young man who has got many chances for the future. However, isolated from a world where the individual is always looking for more - the biggest, the fastest and the prettiest - he becomes invisible.
